The story of Speedy Car Sales is one of South Africa’s most uplifting and inspiring testaments to how hard work and sacrifice can create a successful and thriving empire. With just R300 start up capital borrowed from his father – himself a humble hawker – Farouk Dangor started Speedy Den in 1974.
Then only 19 years old, Farouk invested in 2 mag wheels and sold them for a profit. In his natural manner of forward-thinking, he put that money straight back into his business, expanding into car accessories and working within the competitive racing sphere. Although he got his start in fitting cars for improved performance in competition, Farouk soon began racing competitively himself. With his racing partner Robbi Smith, the pair raced a BMW E36 M3 five-speed Gearbox, which is widely considered to be one of the world’s best race cars.
His days of racing ignited a lifelong passion for performance cars. Over the years, his collection has included a Nissan Skyline GTR R34, his current R35 GTR, and his all-time favorite, a Ferrari 458 Italia. Farouk still owns his M3 touring car, which has been restored to its full glory. His son Mohammed hopes to continue Farouk’s legacy on the racetrack.
Farouk determination to open his own second-hand car dealership started when he began working in the racecar sphere. Because of the apartheid laws of the time, Farouk’s business had to be registered under a white man’s name, and it took a further 2 years to obtain a business loan from the bank.
Despite the incredible obstacles he faced, Farouk has turned Speedy Car Sales into the hugely successful and recognised dealership it is today. Located in Klerksdorp, it has been recognised by motor industry stalwarts as one of the best dealers in South Africa. The dealership has won the Absa Golden Dealer award 22 years in a row, and Farouk has been recognised as Klerksdorp’s Businessman of the year.
Farouk is married to Shameema and they have five children. Shameema is his pillar of support, and he shares his passion of cars with the entire family.
